Q: What’s your favourite part about working at the Chamber?
A: My favourite part about working at the Chamber is the team. The people on this team are truly what compelled me to return for a second summer. The collaboration, dedication, and genuine enjoyment of working with one another make the Chamber not only a great place to work, but a great place to develop in all professional facets. Coming into this internship last year, I never expected my colleagues to show such an interest in my life outside of work and keep in touch throughout the year.
Q: What have you learned, or what are you hoping to learn more about while working at the Chamber?
A: Being on the Business Development team at the Calgary Chamber, speaking with industry professionals is an essential part of this internship. I found this incredibly intimidating in my initial weeks, as I had no experience attending networking events, cold/warm calling, or taking people on coffee chats. However, two months into this internship and working closely with my amazing mentor, Nataly, I have developed a greater level of confidence going into these conversations. This transferable skill is a learning curve that I have and will continue to work on for the remainder of my internship with the Chamber and future careers.
Q: Do you have any major accomplishments or milestones from your internship that you would like to share?
A: One thing that I have always enjoyed about interning at the Calgary Chamber is the involvement they have in the city and the events that they host and are invited to. Thinking back to my favourite experiences so far, being invited by one of my leaders to Darius Rucker’s concert and attending Chamber Fest 2023: Sunset Barbeque were two of my highlights. At the concert, it was my first time receiving VIP access at the Saddledome, and hearing the Recklaws play in the lounge made this such a memorable experience. Chamber Fest was another enjoyable evening because it was an event that both employees and attendees seemed to thoroughly enjoy, and the conversations had were engaging and easy-going.
Q: What are your career goals post-graduation?
A: Thinking about my career post-graduation has always been daunting to me as I have many ideas of how I would like my professional life to look. Now, in my early twenties, I am hoping to land a corporate position that enables me to travel globally because I would love to experience working abroad. Following that, I would like to fulfill my passion for learning more about the real estate sector and obtain a real estate license, before eventually settling down and finding a city that I would like to further advance my career in, once I decide exactly what career path I would like to take.
Q: Where do you see yourself in ten years? What’s the big career dream?
A: In ten years, I hope to own a property and have a fulfilling career that continually requires me to learn and motivates me to do my best. I am a strong believer in the idea that a career must complement one’s life for them to enjoy it, so finding something that I both enjoy doing and can succeed in is important to me. Outside of that, I would like to travel abroad, learn to play the guitar, volunteer more, complete a marathon, and rescue or foster dogs.
Q: What makes you ‘you?’ What are your favourite things to do outside of work?
My weekends are typically spent chasing happy hour with friends and family at restaurants and bars and enjoying a few drinks along the way. I enjoy this because quality time is incredibly important to me and food brings people together. When I’m not doing this, I enjoy walking my golden retriever, Buddy, going to the movie theatre and going for joy rides while listening to music. To recharge, I find cleaning, reading, and writing incredibly therapeutic.
