Hellamaid Cleaning Services in Calgary has quickly become a name synonymous with quality, care and community involvement across Canada. Founded by Ahmed Mezil, a passionate entrepreneur with a background in mechanical engineering, Hellamaid is more than just a cleaning service—it's a company committed to making a difference in every city it touches. From humble beginnings to now serving over 70 cities nationwide, Hellamaid is a Canadian cleaning company demonstrating the power of innovation and community-focused business practices.

Different city, different story

After pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Waterloo and a master’s degree at the University of Toronto, Ahmed began his career as a lab instructor in biomedical engineering at the University of Guelph. However, his passion for entrepreneurship led him to explore other avenues. Inspired by an article on starting a local business in 30 days, Ahmed decided to take actionable steps towards building something of his own.

Recognizing the untapped potential within the home service sector, Ahmed launched Hellamaid with the goal of serving local communities. Today, Hellamaid operates in 70 cities across Canada, but Ahmed emphasizes that their growth has never come at the expense of community care.

"We try to look for local charities and local initiatives where we can take part and actually give back to the city. For us, each city presents a story, each neighborhood has a story, so we want to support communities in any way we can."

A commitment to care

Hellamaid's rapid growth is matched by its strong commitment to social responsibility. The company has broken records every month, largely due to initiatives that reflect its core values.

"One way we support communities on a more national level is by partnering with the Canadian Cancer Society, where for every cleaning service we perform, a portion of the proceeds goes to help fund cancer research initiatives," Ahmed explains.

In addition to national efforts, Hellamaid collaborates with living wage networks in Ontario, Alberta and BC. This initiative ensures that Hellamaid cleaners are paid a living wage, not just the minimum wage, which Ahmed sees as crucial, especially in challenging economic times.

"We make sure we’re not just paying our cleaners minimum wage—we’re paying them a living wage to ensure they’re living comfortably financially."

Changing perceptions

Looking ahead, Ahmed has ambitious plans for Hellamaid. He aims to improve the company’s systems, focusing on automation and enhancing customer service as the business continues to grow. With approximately 170 cleaners currently working with Hellamaid, Ahmed hopes to expand this number to 250 by the end of the year.

Ahmed is particularly enthusiastic about the technical aspects of Hellamaid’s website and branding. He plans to continue prioritizing customer stories, journeys and social content, alongside the essential work carried out by his skilled team.

“I think the cleaning industry is a bit outdated—it’s a little bit too traditional. I want to make Hellamaid a place where it’s okay to be a cleaner,” Ahmed says, expressing his desire to modernize and elevate the industry.

Expansion is also a key focus, with Ahmed setting his sights on making Hellamaid a household name.

"I really want to get to a point where Hellamaid is more of a household name, and when someone thinks of cleaning services, they think of Hellamaid either to get a cleaning for their home or to work with us as well."

Connecting in Calgary

As Hellamaid expands into Calgary, Ahmed is keenly aware that the company's growth is about more than just providing cleaning services.

"When I was looking at Calgary and brainstorming, ‘what can we be a part of in Calgary that can really cement our growth, help our brand awareness and connect with other business owners?’ I couldn’t think of anything else but the Calgary Chamber of Commerce."

The Calgary Chamber has been one aspect of Hellamaid’s efforts to get involved with the city, offering support beyond just technical aspects like website and online benefits.

"I think the Calgary Chamber really goes out of their way to make sure every business owner is well taken care of. I think we’re in it for the long run at the Calgary Chamber because of the value they’ve been providing for us.”

Hellamaid's journey is one of innovation, growth and a deep commitment to community. As the company continues to expand, its focus remains on making a positive impact, both within the cleaning industry and in the cities it serves.
