“This Cabinet sends an important signal that this renewed federal government is committed to an economic agenda aimed at increasing growth and productivity from coast to coast. Seeing key portfolios led by individuals with experience in business illustrates a sense of urgency in the context of addressing Canada’s economic challenges and opportunities. This appears to be a Cabinet that speaks the language of business, which is what Canada needs now.
“With 13 of 28 Cabinet Ministers newly elected, this creates an opportunity for a new and exciting chapter in Canada’s economic story. Following what Canadians asked for as they cast their ballots two weeks ago, the Cabinet portfolios announced send a clear signal that the economy will be a priority for this government. With representation from every province – including Alberta – we are encouraged that the breadth of the Canadian economy will have a seat at Canada’s primary decision-making table and are pleased two former mayors who understand local issues will represent the challenges of Canada’s big cities. We are also optimistic that the smaller cabinet announced today will result in faster decision-making and a government that moves at the speed of business.
“In light of the importance of trade to our economy, we are particularly encouraged to see a new dedicated ministry to the Canada-U.S. Trade relationship and ‘One Canadian Economy,’ which comes in addition to internal and international trade, each of which have their own ministries. With a widespread acknowledgement there is room for increased efficiency and modernization within government and government bodies, we are pleased to see a dedicated focus on Government Transformation and encourage the government to ensure this transformation is advanced throughout the regulatory and approval processes within government. Lastly, with economic diversification and a focus on the 21st century economy, the addition of the Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation as a dedicated portfolio, beyond the existing Ministry of Industry, demonstrates the government is focused on Canada’s economic future. While we are disappointed to see Small Business no longer has its own dedicated minister, we strongly encourage all Cabinet Ministers to take a lens of entrepreneurship and small business in their decision making.
“With Calgary’s economy having outsized contributions from the energy sector, and as a landlocked province that relies on nation-building projects for our prosperity, we are paying close attention to the appointments made in Energy and Natural Resources, and Environment and Climate and Change. We are very encouraged by the appointment of Minister Hodgson, former head of Goldman Sachs Canada, chair of Hydro One and former Board Member of MEG Energy, as he brings exceptional understanding of how capital is risked and allocated, and understands the impact of policy uncertainty on investment decisions, particularly regarding the long cycle nature of capital needed in the natural resources sector.
“With several new faces also comes some unknowns. While we are encouraged to see a focus on the economy through the portfolios announced today, the business community will be closely watching the legislative agenda, public policy decisions and election promises prioritized as the government works to bolster our trade to deliver the fuel, food and ingenuity the world needs; advance the success of small and emerging businesses; and build Canada’s economy for the benefit of all Canadians.
“The federal government’s bold ambition to advance a robust and ambitious economic agenda requires collaboration. As the convenor and voice of Calgary’s business community, we look forward to working collaboratively with the incoming federal government and the new Cabinet Ministers appointed to accelerate Canada’s economic growth and productivity for the benefit of all Canadians.”
